About The Bursary


Illovo Sugar South Africa (PTY) Ltd invites University students from previously disadvantaged groups (low-income BBBEE designated applicants) in South Africa to apply for bursary funding of their under graduate studies in the following fields: 

  1. Engineering (Electrical heavy and light current) 
  2. Mechanical Engineering
  3. Chemical Engineering
  4. Industrial Engineering 
  5. Human Resource Management 
  6. Agriculture 
  7. Finance
  8. and other degrees closely-related to those fields of study. 

The bursary covers academic fees (including registration, tuition and examination fees), accommodation, meals and prescribed text books. 

 

Bursaries will be awarded in line with the Employment Equity plan of the organisation.

Who Can Apply


Applicants must be: 

  1. South African citizens
  2. In 2023; be studying matric or on a gap-year after matric in 2022
  3. In 2024; be studying their 1st or 2nd year of their qualification
  4. Have an interest in working for Illovo. 
  5. Belong to a BBBEE racial designated group (Black, Coloured, Indian, etc)
  6. Studying full-time (2024 onwards). 
  7. Studying at a DHET-recognised national South African university or university of technology (no community/private colleges)
  8. Unemployed (not working full-time in 2024), 
  9. Only self-funded students will be considered (students who have a bursary or NSFAS do not qualify).

Have applied to study in 2024 or have already been accepted for registration in 2024. Preference will be given to students who come from communities surrounding the Illovo SA operations.

Bursaries are offered only for studies leading to degrees or equivalent NQF-rated qualifications. 

Bursaries will be awarded in line with the Employment Equity plan of the organisation.

Please prepare the following documents:

    All Applicants: 

    1. Certified copy of a valid South African identity document. 
    2. Recent certified Parents/Guardian's valid South African ID (or death certificate if deceased)*
    3. Certified Proof of Guardianship (ie, un-abridged birth certificate showing employee as parent, or court order evidencing guardianship). 
    4. A 1-page motivational letter explaining why you want to study this qualification and what makes you uniquely-valuable for the sponsor to invest in your studies & career. 
  • All certified documents must be less than 3 months old. 
  • *Where you have multiple documents for 1 submission, please combine/scan them into 1 file that you can upload.

    1. Grade 12 Term 2 Report (stamped) - With official school stamp

     

    Scholar in Matric / Gap Year Student

    1. Certified copy of valid matric certificate (Grade 12)

     

    Undergraduate

  • 2023 Official Proof of Registration at university (for 2023 academic year) - Must be official document from university
  • Certified copy of the latest Official academic transcript/s- (combined doc required for applicants that have enrolled at multiple institutions during their tertiary studies*)
  • Honours/ Masters/Doctoral

  • DO NOT QUALIFY FOR THE BURSARY

    1. Disability? Dept of Labour Employment Equity Act (EEA1) Form AND a Doctors’ Letter *
    2. Did you get funded by another bursary/NSFAS?; upload your bursary agreement/letter/offer*
    3. A copy of 2024 acceptance letter from an accredited institution. - Official letter showing you've been accepted (even provisionally) to study the qualification in 2024*

For applicants under the age of 18, to comply with POPI regulations a signed consent form completed by your parent/legal guardian along with a certified copy of their proof of identity is required.
